Exploring AI is pretty fun. I've discovered the many efficiencies it creates. I stay on top of the latest developments in AI and continue to educate myself. Recently, I obtained my certification as an AI-Powered Coach. However, I’ll admit this new frontier makes me anxious.

The Uncertainty of AI's Impact
Why? Because no one can predict exactly where this technology is headed or how it will affect each of us. In fact, Walmart Chief Executive Doug McMillon recently said, “It’s very clear that AI is going to change literally every job.”
Without a clear picture of how AI and technology could impact your career, what should you do? Stick your head in the sand and hope for the best? Absolutely not.
The Importance of a Career Backup Plan
What you should do is create a career backup plan. If you want continued success in your career, you should always be proactive. I’ve long advocated that people have a career backup plan even if they are perfectly happy. The worst thing you can do is think your job is safe. To be blunt, no career is "safe."
I’ve seen this scenario too many times: an employee spends 25 years at the same company, believing their loyalty and impact will protect them. Then—out of nowhere—they’re handed a layoff notice. They don't know where to begin. And they are definitely not in the right headspace to embark on a job search. In fact, they don’t even have a LinkedIn profile because they never thought they’d need one. Starting from that point is excruciatingly difficult. Having a career backup plan can soften the landing of these unexpected events that impact your career.
Preparing for the Future
I’m not saying it’s time to panic. But it is wise to be prepared. AI is already changing the way we live and do business. A backup plan gives you security and confidence, no matter what changes lie ahead.
Building Your Backup Plan
A few years ago, I wrote about how to build your backup plan. You can read it here: “Do You Have a Career Backup Plan?”.
Embracing Change
Change can be daunting, but it can also be an opportunity. Embrace the possibilities that AI brings. Think of it as a tool that can enhance your skills rather than replace them.
Networking and Connections
Networking is crucial. Build relationships with others in your field. Attend conferences, join professional groups, and connect with people on platforms like LinkedIn. These connections can provide support and open doors when you need them most.
Continuous Learning
Never stop learning. Take courses, attend workshops, and stay updated on industry trends. The more knowledge you have, the more valuable you become. This is especially true in a world where AI is evolving rapidly.
Diversifying Your Skills
Consider diversifying your skills. If you’re in a specific niche, think about how you can branch out. This could mean learning new software, understanding data analytics, or even exploring project management. The more versatile you are, the better prepared you’ll be for whatever comes your way.
Staying Positive
Finally, stay positive. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the changes happening around us. But remember, every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Keep your head up and focus on what you can control.
What’s Your Plan?
So, what’s your plan? Are you ready to face the future with confidence? Remember, having a career backup plan isn’t just about preparing for the worst. It’s about empowering yourself to seize new opportunities. Embrace AI, stay proactive, and keep pushing forward. Your career journey is yours to shape!
